SINGAPORE (Aug 8): Singapore shares ended higher Monday with banks leading the gains.

At 5.04pm, the key Straits Times Index was up 42.61 points or 1.51% to 2,870.78. About 938 million shares valued at $1.04 million changed hands. Gainers outnumbered losers 226 to 186.

DBS Group Holdings rose 1.4% to close at $15.04 after its second-quarter earnings beat street expectations despite showing a 5.9% drop in second-quarter net profit. Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. and United Overseas Bank was up 2.2% at 0.7% respectively.
