Digital infrastructure company Equinix has announced an investment of US$86 million ($117 million) to expand its fifth International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Singapore, SG5.
The move aims to help more businesses in Singapore become more sustainable as they take advantage of the digital economy.
Located at the Tanjong Kling data centre park, SG5 is a nine-story facility that has been awarded the Green Mark Platinum certification by the Singapore Building and Construction Authority (BCA) for its sustainable design and practices.
SG5 leverages Equinix’s bespoke and innovative surface cooling technology, known as the Equinix Cooling Array, which supports high-density customers while reducing water and energy requirements. Besides that, the facility uses energy-efficient technology and energy savings solutions, including adaptive control systems and cold/hot aisle containment.
The SG5 expansion adds more than 1,475 cabinets to meet the digital connectivity requirements of both current and new customers. When fully built, SG5 will offer 5,000 cabinets, with a colocation space of nearly 129,000 square feet (approximately 12,000 square metres).
Equinix will also establish a cable landing station for Inlingo Networks’s Asia Connect Cable System (ACC1) subsea cable in Singapore to further provide the connectivity that digital businesses need. ACC1 will provide low latency, high capacity connectivity between Singapore, Indonesia, Timor Leste, Australia and the United States.

“The expanded capacity of SG5 enables us to empower customers to access the ecosystems and provide the interconnection they need to participate and be successful in the digital economy,” says Yee May Leong, managing director of Equinix South Asia, at a media briefing this morning.
She continues: “The BCA Green Mark Platinum certification is a testament to our ability to build sustainable data centres, which is in line with the Singapore government’s National Green Plan 2030 and Smart Nation agenda.”
Leong also shares that Equinix’s data centres in Singapore achieved 100% renewable in 2020. The company will continue exploring the use of sustainable solutions, such as software-defined power, in its facilities to further support Singapore’s strong commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and reach net-zero emission by or around 2050.

Currently, Equinix has 240 IBX data centres in 66 metros across 27 countries globally. In Asia Pacific, it operates 52 IBX data centres in Singapore, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan and Korea.
Its Singapore data centres are business hubs for over 855 companies, including more than 315 enterprises. Housing over 225 international and regional networks connecting South Asia, its Singapore facilities allow customers to interconnect directly with other customers and leverage direct connectivity to more than 255 cloud and IT service providers.
