SINGAPORE (Feb 6): The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) could see trade volumes disrupted but will be less vulnerable than Northeast Asia if China and the US engage in a trade war, says Maybank Kim Eng.

And with President Donald Trump adopting a confrontational “America First” trade policy, that possibility is becoming all too real.

“The big risk to Asia and Asean remains whether Trump follows through on his threats against China,” says Maybank lead analyst Chua Hak Bin in a report on Feb 3. “It’s probably only a matter of time before Trump targets China on trade.”
