SINGAPORE (July 18): Malaysia’s government has appointed Tan Rajah & Cheah, a Singapore law firm, as its solicitors to institute legal action against 53 individuals and companies to claim back the monies allegedly siphoned from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Bernama cited a source saying that Malaysia’s Attorney-General Tommy Thomas has already given his approval on the law firm earlier this week.

Malaysia had to appoint Singapore solicitors to file the action as Malaysian lawyers are not allowed to appear in Singapore courts.

The source also said that the Malaysian government would file an application in Singapore’s High Court against the 53 defendants for orders to retrieve the 1MDB monies.

In addition, Thomas has recently met with Singapore Attorney-General Lucien Wong to facilitate the recovery of 1MDB monies, which had previously been frozen by the Singapore authorities, according to the source.

Low Taek Jho, who has been famed for his alleged associated to the 1MDB scandal, is among one of the 53 defendants.
