SINGAPORE (May 14): The head of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission resigned Monday, providing Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad a free hand in appointing an antigraft chief as the new administration closes in on financial scandals surrounding former leader Najib Razak.

People familiar with the matter say Dzulkifli Ahmad resigned early in the day.

But there is no sign yet of a similar move from Attorney General Mohamed Apandi Ali, who cleared Najib in an earlier investigation into malfeasance at state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd, or 1MDB. He went to his office on the first full working day since Najib lost May 9's national election. On Friday, Mahathir announced a probe into Apandi Ali's actions while in office.
