Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Malaysia’s Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga – ST) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector on Oct 28.
The MOU will enable both organisations to enhance their sharing of knowledge and technical cooperation in the planning and reliability of gas and electricity systems. The MOU will also help with regulation of wholesale and retail electricity markets and cooperation at multilateral meetings.
Following the signing of the MOU, EMA and ST will hold a virtual dialogue in the first half of 2021 to discuss the challenges and impact of Covid-19 in the energy sectors in both Singapore and Malaysia.
"This MOU will strengthen the exchanges between EMA and ST. I look forward to closer collaboration on issues of mutual interest, such as greater integration of renewable energy into our national grids,” says Ngiam Shih Chun, CEO of EMA.
“The industry landscape as a whole is becoming more challenging than ever, especially post COVID-19. We look forward to a greater relationship with our peer in Singapore and we are sure that this will be a win-win collaboration for both countries,” adds Razib Dawood, CEO of ST.
The signing took place at the sidelines of the 13th Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW), where Ngiam and Razib, along with other speakers, shared their views on the regulatory challenges facing energy systems during a panel discussion at the SIEW Energy Insights.
