SINGAPORE (Jan 2): Raffles Medical Group (RMG) says its 700-bed hospital in Chongqing is now open, with a second hospital to open in Shanghai, Pudong Qintan, this year.

Raffles Hospital Chongqing marks Singapore’s first international tertiary hospital in China, and brings RMG’s presence in Asia to 14 cities, eight of which are in China.

The building has two tower blocks connected by a podium, and has a gross floor area (GFA) of over 100,000 sq m.

When fully opened, the hospital will offer a full complement of specialist services with state-of-the-art medical technology and centres of excellence in gastrointestinal surgery, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatrics, cardiovascular surgery, neuroscience and oncology.

Staff from Raffles Hospital Singapore are selected and seconded to the Chongqing facility, with some locally-hired senior staff and doctors sent to Singapore for attachment to ensure that they are familiar with Raffles Hospital’s system and service model.

In a Wednesday filing, RMG says Raffles Hospital Chongqing will draw on Singapore’s expertise and clinical resources to develop training and research.

The group aspires to attract patients from the South Western region of China and Central Asia to the facility, considering its strategic location at the Liangjiang New Area in Chongqing and in the same district as the Chongqing International Airport.

“This is an exciting time for us at Raffles as we have been looking at the healthcare space in China for some time. We are committed to bring the Raffles brand of quality, peer-reviewed healthcare to China through Raffles Hospital Chongqing and, in time to come, Raffles Hospital Shanghai,” says Loo Choon Yong, executive chairman of RMG.

Shares in RMG last traded at $1.10 on Monday.
