Skyscraper (The Bruges Whale) at ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands

SINGAPORE (Dec 13): For the first time in Asia-Pacific, the Skyscraper sculpture, an 11m tall installation made from ocean plastic and steel support, will be on display at the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands (main image). Designed by award-winning architects and designers Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang from the acclaimed StudioKCA in New York, the sculpture — which weighs a total of five tonnes — is an interpretation of the theme “Liquid City” for the 2018 Bruges Triennial.
The Bruges Triennial, which brings contemporary art and architecture to the historic city centre of Bruges once every three years, invites international artists and architects to submit new temporary installations to spark conversation on our surroundings and the planet.
Brought to Singapore by the Ocean Recovery Alliance, the sculpture is made from plastic waste collected from the ocean over a period of four months, in collaboration with the Hawaii Wildlife Fund. After sorting the plastic by size and colour, as well as working on the engineering of the internal steel structure, StudioKCA ran a successful Kickstarter campaign for the fabrication and shipping of the enormous installation. The plastic waste — ranging from hangers and kitchen bowls to toilet seats and car bumpers — was then shaped into an imposing whale sculpture to serve as a stark visual reminder of the 150 million tonnes of plastic polluting our waters.

The eighth edition of the Singapore Art Week (SAW) — a joint initiative by the National Arts Council, Singapore Tourism Board and Singapore Economic Development Board — will return with new works and exciting art experiences happening island-wide for people of all ages to explore and enjoy. There will also be talks, tours, fairs and gallery openings to catch.
In keeping with SAW’s theme of “Art Takes Over”, more than 100 art events will take place across Singapore in various venues across the island, including arts and culture institutions and private galleries as well as art precincts and independent art spaces.
There is art for everyone — from collectors and connoisseurs, to those who are drawn to the innovative, quirky, unusual, thought-provoking and multi-sensorial — in fresh and exciting formats. Signature events such as the Light to Night Festival, S.E.A. Focus, IMPART Collectors’ Show, ARTWALK Little India, Aliwal Urban Art Festival and Art After Dark at Gillman Barracks return with new offerings as well.

After a severe casting, they engage Louise, who quickly conquers the affection of their children and slowly occupies a central place in the home. Gradually the trap of mutual dependence will close, until the tragedy. Starring Leïla Bekhti, Karin Viard and Antoine Reinartz, this drama-thriller is in French, with English subtitles.
