SINGAPORE (March 3): Bharti Airtel, which is 36.2% owned by largest shareholder Singtel, and Millicom International Cellular, has signed an agreement to merge their operations in Ghana, West Africa, through their respective subsidiaries Airtel Ghana and Tigo Ghana.

Under the agreement, the new joint entity will be equally owned and governed by Bharti Airtel and Millicom.

The telcos hope to compete effectively in Ghana by positioning themselves as the second largest operator there after the merger, serving nearly 10 million customers, of which 5.6 million are data customers.
