SINGAPORE (June 3): A driverless car on Singapore’s Orchard Road? Don’t rub your eyes now. Drive-by-wire is no longer science fiction. The era of self-driving cars is finally here and you will probably see one in your neighbourhood much sooner than you think.

Let us quickly separate the hype from reality. Self-driving vehicles have been around for a while now.

“Large autonomous vehicles have been deployed in Australian and North American mines for some years to reduce labour costs, improve safety and cut carbon emissions,” notes Michele Bertoncello, associate principal at McKinsey & Co in Treviso, Italy.
