SINGAPORE (Jan 21): Emerging market (EM) equities did well last year. In 2016, the MSCI Emerging Markets Index gained 8.6% and returned 11.3%, including dividends.

In comparison, the MSCI World Index, which reflects the performance of 23 Developed Markets (DMs), gained 5.3% and returned 8.2%.

Despite their recent outperformance, EM stocks remain cheap. The MSCI EM Index trades at 1.7 times its book value while the MSCI World Index trades at 2.2 times.
