SINGAPORE (Dec 23): Up until the 15th century, the Italian city of Venice was one of the wealthiest states around.

Its fleets of galleys and armies of traders and soldiers projected power the way US aircraft carriers do today. It was dubbed the “City of Fortune”.

Then, the Mediterranean routes quietened, and Venice’s port slid into obscurity. Today, Venice has a reputation as little more than a tourist magnet and a movie set.
