SINGAPORE (Nov 25): Marie Owens Thomsen, chief economist at Indosuez Wealth Management, is not convinced that Donald Trump has toned down from his alarming rhetoric on trade and immigration.

Among some of the more worrying promises made by Trump on the campaign trail are slapping a 45% tariff on all imports from China, officially labelling it a currency manipulator and withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, an agreement to liberalise the flow of goods between the US and 11 other countries on the Pacific Rim.

“Trump repeated these promises with conviction and won the election based on this protectionist platform. He also has control over both houses of Congress. So, why should we think he is not going to carry out any of his promises? We have to assume that we will get what Trump says he will do,” she tells The Edge Singapore.
