In the face of aviation’s greatest crisis to date, Ng Chin Hwee, CEO of SIA Engineering (SIAEC), should be worried sick. After all, the company makes money from providing maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for planes that criss-cross the skies.

But the Covid-19 pandemic has put a huge dent on air travel, no thanks to border restrictions. Air travel is only forecast to return to pre-Covid-19 levels by 2024, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Yet if Ng is worried, he is not showing it. Rather, Ng who was appointed CEO on April 1 — at the height of the pandemic — has taken advantage of the downtime to prepare SIAEC for an eventual recovery in air travel.
