SBS Transit has inked a $14 million contract with Motorola Solutions to maintain and upgrade its critical radio communications network across the Downtown Line and Sengkang-Punggol LRT system over the next 15 years.

The contract aims to enhance the resilience and performance of the Motorola TETRA radio system, which SBS Transit has used for the past decade to coordinate front-line teams and support the continued delivery of safe, smooth and successful rail operations.

The long-term agreement will include on-site and remote monitoring, local technical support, cyber resilience services and system updates to ensure the TETRA system continues running smoothly across SBS’s fleet of over 8,700 radios. These upgrades are also set to support the expansion of the Downtown Line, including the addition of two stations to cut commute times between Singapore’s east and west by up to 15 minutes.

The contract extension follows a surge in demand for SBS Transit’s services, with ridership jumping 18% to 428 million trips in 2023, according to a joint press release.

“Our TETRA radio solutions provide secure communication links between front-line workers and command centres, helping to strengthen awareness, collaboration and safety across entire operations. By accessing our solutions as a managed service, SBS Transit can remain focused on delivering its daily operations while planning for continued growth and expansion of its rail services over time,” says Rajat Gupta, vice president for Motorola Solutions Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa.
