ST Engineering's new smart shipyard.
A next-generation smart yard, ST Engineering’s new shipyard at Gul Road is equipped with a 5G digital infrastructure to enable the application of AI-powered technologies.
Those advanced solutions include a proprietary integrated yard management system, which will oversee all aspects of the shipyard’s operations. It streamlines workflow management, from planning and resource allocation to tracking project milestones and predicting potential bottlenecks. It also features predictive maintenance to prevent unplanned downtime by detecting early signs of equipment failure, and condition-based monitoring for real-time tracking of equipment and ships.
To ensure workplace safety, the shipyard will use ST Engineering’s AGIL Vision and security robots to provide real-time hazard detection and automated safety alerts. Drones will be used to inspect hazardous and hard-to-reach areas. Additionally, IoT-enabled devices, including smartwatches and helmets, will provide real-time updates on work progress and monitor workers’ safety.

The shipyard will deploy electric-powered automated guided vehicles and buggies to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, as well as implement efficient scrap sorting and recycling processes to minimise waste. It will also adopt renewable energy sources like ammonia, hydrogen, biofuel and solar power to reduce carbon emissions.
DIGITAL LIFE
Google has jumped onto the foldable phone bandwagon with the launch of its Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The device impresses with a 6.3-inch OLED display that unfolds into a sleek and expansive 8-inch LTPO canvas, perfect for multitasking and immersive media consumption. Its hinge mechanism is smooth and sturdy so the phone closes with a satisfying “click”. The device maintains a slim profile of just 5.1mm when unfolded, although its 257g weight might not be ideal for extended one-handed use.

Performance and battery life
Powered by the latest Google Tensor G4 processor and coupled with 16GB of RAM, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold delivers seamless performance whether you're gaming, recording, or multitasking across multiple apps. The 4,650mAh battery is optimised to support the device's power-hungry features, offering all-day usage on a single charge.
For an average user, the phone can last through a day that includes checking emails, working on documents, browsing the web, streaming media, and using social media. Even with a full day of recording videos and taking photos, the battery usage is efficient, typically ending the day with slightly above 20% battery remaining. The device also supports fast charging and Qi-certified wireless charging, ensuring you never run out of power while on the go.
Camera enhancements
You can take high-quality selfies using Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s ultra-thin advanced triple rear camera system, with the outer screen displaying your shot. For hands-free group shots, fold the phone to a 90-degree angle, place it on a level surface with the rear camera facing the group and hold up your hand to trigger the shutter.

“Add Me” is another notable camera feature for the phone. After activating it, take a photo of the group. Then switch places with someone and take a second photo with you in it. Pixel will use real-time augmented reality to guide the second photographer to frame the photo to match the composition of the first photo. After which, Pixel combines the two images so everyone including both photographers are included.
To buy or not to?
If you rely heavily on your phone, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is for you. Its large, vibrant display makes multitasking, productivity, and media consumption seamless. However, you’ll need to get used to handling the phone with two hands if you’re always using the larger display. Its hefty price tag of $2,399+ (which is comparable to other foldable phones in the market) is another point of consideration. It might sway you to get a tablet or sacrifice some features and go for the non-foldable Pixel 9 phones instead.
