SINGAPORE (Jan 22): My Global Portfolio is exactly one month old this week. Total portfolio value is up 6.8% to US$534,186, outpacing the MSCI World index gains over this period. In fact, it has outperformed the benchmark index in three of the past four weeks. Seven out of our nine stocks are making profits. We will write on our conviction for the laggards, Facebook and Walt Disney Co, in the coming weeks.

Notably, the portfolio is only about 85% invested (including the purchase of China Sunsine Chemical Holdings on Jan 16. The market value of our basket of stocks is up by a larger 8.1% since inception. This means we have, in fact, outperformed the benchmark index by nearly twofold.

Though it is still early days yet, I believe the portfolio’s performance validates our investing strategy. We choose stocks based on fundamentals (sales and margins over time, balance sheet and so on) rather than by any particular market or trend. This way, we can achieve true diversification, which is the point of having a portfolio of assets.
