High-tech toilets used to be a novelty limited to Japanese hotels: built-in bidets, warmed seats and all sorts of functions one might use only when on holiday in the land known for its mastery of machines. But that’s no longer the case, with several high-end options now featuring a range of capabilities going beyond the basic flush. These new options blend modern design with advanced features, so you can answer nature’s call at home in comfort — and in style, to boot.

TOTO Neorest LS

So well-known for its toilets that it even has its own museum in Japan, TOTO is practically a legend when it comes to upscale, high-tech porcelain thrones. The Neorest LS exemplifies the brand’s sleek aesthetic: the toilet features clean lines and metallic trim, all while maintaining comfort with its subtle curves. Instead of a built-in control panel, the Neorest LS comes with a remote control that can be wall-mounted, meaning fewer awkward reacharounds just to get the bidet working.

Kohler Formation 02

Unveiled at Milan Design Week this year, the Formation 02 is the second product released under the collaboration between Kohler and industrial design studio SR_A. This limited-edition release is a result of unique moulding and tooling techniques to produce dramatic edges and angles. The Formation 02’s bright orange colour — rather than the usual white or black — is also sure to pop in any bathroom. Features include customisable cleansing modes, a touchscreen remote control and even a nightlight.

AXENT.ONE

Perhaps the first thing one thinks of when looking at toilets is cleanliness — or lack thereof. The AXENT.ONE by Swiss brand AXENT more or less guarantees hygiene in every aspect. The toilet’s surfaces are finished with the brand’s Easy Clean coating, while a ceramic glaze with silver ions is said to reduce bacterial load by up to 99.9%. On the bidet, a self-cleaning nozzle in antibacterial stainless steel promises a clean finish to any bathroom visit. The remote control, meanwhile, comes in the form of a circular dial, meaning switching between functions comes just with the flick of a wrist.

Duravit SensoWash Starck f

A toilet with an app might sound excessive, but the SensoWash Starck f by Duravit proves it’s a proposition that works. No more fumbling with controls or figuring out which buttons do what — a simple tap is all it takes to get washing, cleaning and drying. An open-rim flushing mechanism means all parts of the toilet’s inside surface are washed with each flush; energy-saving modes also ensure that your loo doesn’t rack up a hefty electricity bill while you’re away on holiday.
