Singapore Technologies Engineering’s (ST Engineering) defence and public security (DPS) arm has signed a strategic agreement with Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering (KPE) to set up in-country production capability for a new 8x8 amphibious multi-purpose armoured vehicle.

This includes engineering and technical support for the design and production of the vehicle, based on ST Engineering’s field-tested Terrex infantry fighting vehicle. The new vehicle will be manufactured at KPE’s production facility in Kazakhstan starting from 2025.

The partnership continues to be a part of ST Engineering’s international defence business strategy as it continues to pursue growth through localisation, in-country operations support, as well as licensing with industry partners.

“This marks a breakthrough for our land systems business in terms of securing its first significant international land platform contract in recent years, as well as entry into a new market in Central Asia,” says Lim Kok Ann, land systems business president, ST Engineering.

Aibek Baryssov, chairman of the supervisory board, KPE, adds: “KPE's production capabilities stand at 500 units of various types of armoured vehicles per year per shift and our extensive experience in deep localisation, scientific research, and the operation of armoured vehicles in Kazakhstan's unique geographic conditions, together with ST Engineering, will enable us to fully meet the needs of the armed forces of the republic of Kazakhstan for amphibious 8x8 vehicles.”

As at 3.22 pm, shares in ST Engineering are trading 1 cent higher or 0.22% up at $4.59.
