SINGAPORE (Jan 20): Keppel Corporation announced Monday it has secured contracts worth over 12 million euro ($18 million) to supply waste-to-energy (WTE) technology and services in India.
The contracts were awarded by Gujarat-based Abellon Clean Energy to Keppel Seghers Belgium NV, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Infrastructure Holdings, which, in turn, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Corp.
Keppel Seghers will provide the core equipment, design, and technical services for the plant’s air-cooled grate and vertical boiler.
These are designed to achieve efficient energy recovery and operational reliability. When completed, the facility can effectively reduce the volume of waste that goes to landfills by over 90%.
“The amount of waste being generated by communities worldwide has been rising in tandem with rapid urbanisation and this is a challenge that has to be tackled responsibly,” says Dr Ong Tiong Guan, CEO of Keppel Infrastructure.
As one of the most populous nations in the world, India produces one of the highest amounts of municipal solid waste, with only a fraction of it being treated.

The majority of the waste is either landfilled or disposed in open areas. As such, waste-to-energy is garnering increasing attention as a viable waste treatment option for many states of India.
According to Keppel Corp, these WTE projects would be first-of-its-kind in Gujarat.
“Modern waste-to-energy plants have proven to be an effective strategy to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills. Having successfully implemented over 100 WTE projects around the world, we look forward to delivering Keppel Seghers’ proven WTE technology that will contribute to the State of Gujarat achieving its waste management goals,” Ong says.

The contract wins are not expected to have any material impact on Keppel Corp’s earnings per share and net tangible asset per share for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2020.
As at 12pm, shares in Keppel Corp are trading 2 cents lower at $6.82.
