Maybank Singapore has appointed Datuk Yee Yang Chien as the chairman of its board. Yee will take up his position with effect from Oct 1.

He will succeed Datuk R. Karunakaran, who retired as chairman on Sept 30. Karunakaran was chairman for six years.

Yee was appointed as a non-independent non-executive director of Maybank on Nov 24, 2023. He was then named a non-independent non-executive director of Maybank Singapore on Aug 15.

Yee’s career spans several decades in local and international financial institutions, with a career spanning external and internal audit, equity research and investment banking. His career includes 20 years at shipping conglomerate MISC Berhad. He retired as the president and group CEO of MISC in September 2022.

“[Yee’s] extensive background in leading large-scale transformations will be invaluable in driving the rapid growth of Maybank Singapore, steering the organisation towards greater sustainable growth and innovation,” says Maybank Singapore in an Oct 1 statement.

“We express our heartfelt appreciation to Datuk R. Karunakaran for his outstanding contributions, dedicated service, and unwavering commitment during his tenure as chairman since 2018. His leadership has been pivotal in shaping a forward-thinking organisation that aligns closely with the bank’s strategic mission,” Maybank adds.
