The Original Pilot Silver by Rimowa, which made its debut in 1994, is back, and along with it the myriad of functions that served pilots. The bag fits between the two pilot seats in a cockpit and for ease of use, it opens like a classic pilot case to provide easy access to materials inside. Of course, what fans identify with is the iconic aluminium exterior inspired by the early days of aviation. While it may have been made originally with pilots in mind, the updated version is used by DJs as a makeshift case to element-proof their records and equipment, and by business travellers who found convenience in storing both their files and travel essentials in one place. The bags are made by experimenting with sustainable production processes, and by applying new leather manufacturing techniques. One example is Oleum, the brand that identifies the biodegradable leather line produced by Cyclica; the bags follow a circular model for their production. The leathers are meant to become Oleum originate from traceable European farms, which are by-products of the food industry and are vegetable tanned with wastewater from oil production, thus avoiding the direct use of aldehydes and glyphosate. The result is that the leather is metal-free and environmentally non-toxic.
