Parkroyal on Beach Road, managed by Pan Pacific Hotels Group, is not just an upscale accommodation; it is an experience.

It is where modern living meets a deep connection to the destination, offering travellers a sense of belonging and an engagement with the local culture and community. Nestled in the heart of the city, Parkroyal on Beach Road offers easy access to vibrant locales like the historic Kampong Gelam and the buzzing Haji Lane, the narrowest street in Singapore known for its street art, heritage businesses and Malay traditions.

Parkroyal Hotels & Resorts has launched a new brand experience enticing guests to go beyond the guidebook and explore the culturally rich precincts of its properties. The “All Things Local” experiences exemplify Parkroyal’s network of properties as a gateway to vibrant locales, from Singapore and Malaysia to Japan and Australia, and beyond.

Cinn Tan, chief commercial and marketing officer, Pan Pacific Hotels Group, says: “The tradition of these local crafts and cuisine should continue to be appreciated today. With Parkroyal Hotels & Resorts positioned as a gateway to vibrant locales, we invite guests to join us in keeping cultures alive through discovering local stories, engaging in activities to understand local art, and supporting local businesses. Through this brand experience, we hope to provide our guests with authentic, immersive and novel ways to connect with people and places when they stay with Parkroyal.”

From now till April 6, Parkroyal on Beach Road presents the “All Things Local” stay package, starting from $380++. It is an immersive two-day, one-night experience that includes one activity of choice for two persons, aimed at connecting guests with the authentic spirit of Singapore.

The package is a thoughtful curation of hands-on and interactive experiences, ranging from culinary adventures to artisan workshops, in partnership with local curator Culturally, known for crafting unforgettable journeys into the heritage of destinations.

Artisan workshops

Guests booking a stay at the hotel will now be able to select from experiences that include a ketupat/bazhang leather crafting workshop or an intimate visit to the home of local kueh mould collector Jasmine Adams.

Options had the chance to experience Household Treasures with Adams; and needless to say, it was an enjoyable and educational weekend. The programme is what I would call a “rare gem”, as in Singapore, you would hardly ever be invited into someone’s home and learn about it.

This is a heartfelt experience guided by Adams’s passion and knowledge. Hosted in her home, the setting is intimate and welcoming, giving tourists a unique glimpse into the life of a local while diving deep into the world of pastry stamping and moulding. For locals, it is an eye-opener, as one gets to learn more about the Peranakan culture and appreciate the architectural beauty of Adams’s home.

Adams welcomes you in her home and her storytelling is captivating as she takes you on a trip back in time, explaining the origins and evolution of pastry stamping and moulding. Her collection of heirloom moulds is not just impressive, but also a testament to the domestic craft’s development. As she shares stories of Ang Ku Kueh and other popular Singaporean pastries, you’ll find yourself fascinated by the often-overlooked symbols and their meanings embedded in these culinary delights.

Taking home a piece of history

Listening to Adams recount how she began collecting moulds is like opening a treasure chest of delightful anecdotes. Each mould has a story and a history, which Jasmine brings to life with her engaging narrative. This makes you feel connected to the history and culture of Singapore in a very special way.

After a history lesson, you’ll have the chance to take home a small piece of history with a touch of your creativity. Adams has prepared a range of plaster moulds made from some of her kueh moulds with a magnet attached to the back. Take your pick and get creative and paint away.

Once you are done with that, you will be treated to a selection of handpicked Peranakan kuehs in Adams’s dining area or garden patio. As you savour each bite, Adams explains the symbols and the evolution of the recipes. This is not just a tasting session; it is an educational experience that enriches your understanding of these simple yet history-rich snacks.

The Household Treasures experience with Adams is a must-do for anyone looking to connect with Singapore’s culinary and cultural history on a deeper level. Jasmine’s warmth and knowledge, as well as the intimate setting, make for an unforgettable experience. It is a journey into the heart of Singapore’s domestic crafts, culinary traditions, and the stories that have shaped them. It is highly recommended for locals and tourists alike seeking a unique, enriching experience.

After the programme, head back to the hotel to enjoy the facilities. The rooms are a blend of comfort and style, offering the perfect space to unwind. The rooms are elegantly furnished, combining contemporary aesthetics with functional design to create a relaxing atmosphere. Large windows offer panoramic views of the city, bringing in natural light and the vibrant energy of Singapore.

With its elegant rooms, exceptional amenities and prime location, the hotel is an ideal choice for those looking to explore Singapore’s heritage, indulge in its culinary delights, and enjoy a stay that is comfortable as it is culturally enriching.
