SEE | Meet feathered friends | Bird Paradise

Opening on May 8 at Mandai Wildlife Reserve in Singapore, Bird Paradise is one of Asia’s largest bird parks. The 17ha park is home to 3,500 birds from 400 species. Visitors can now walk through Singapore’s new bird park and get a glimpse of how the birds and their caregivers are settling into their new home.

Designed to encourage discovery at every turn, Bird Paradise welcomes visitors into immersive and naturalistic mixed-species habitats in eight large walk-through aviaries that reflect different biomes of the world, from dense African rainforests to South American wetlands, Southeast Asian paddy fields, Australian dry eucalypt forests, and more. Other unique experiences include Ocean Network Express Penguin Cove and animal programmes at the 2,000-seater Sky Amphitheatre.

Avian care, research and conservation are integral to the park. Key focus species include Asian Songbirds and Hornbills, with Bird Paradise home to over 20 species — making it the world’s largest living genetic reserve of Hornbills under human care. The park will also be involved in over 75 ex-situ globally managed breeding programmes and conservation programmes where several species are directly linked to regional field conservation projects.

Visitors can look forward to intimate, keeper-led experiences, or take a “backstage pass” to discover what goes into caring for the feathered residents. These include an exclusive look at the Avian Healthcare and Research Centre, where guests can observe the vets in action as they provide the best care for their charges.

Next to the new park, enjoy the many dining and retail options as well as playgrounds and public artworks at Mandai Wildlife West, the new ungated public node which serves as the gateway to Bird Paradise and the upcoming Rainforest Wild. Tickets for the soft opening, from May 8–26, are priced at $38 for adults and $23 for children and available at mandai.com.

Trash to Couture | Lendlease

Get ready to witness a one-of-its-kind sustainable spectacle as 313@somerset sets the stage ablaze with a trash-to-couture runway show on May 11, marking the grand opening of this year’s You Won’t Believe It’s Trash (Y.W.B.I.T.) campaign. The top 10 finalists stand to win prizes up to $21,500 in a combination of cash and Lendlease e-vouchers.

Having showcased creative art pieces such as movie props and models made from discarded and recycled items last year, this year’s Y.W.B.I.T. – Trash to Couture shifts its focus to fashion, kicking off with a competition to find Singapore’s budding designers’ game to transform trash into fashion, happening ahead of a roving exhibition and recycling drive across all Lendlease malls.

The purpose of this campaign is to educate local shoppers about the consequences of wastage in the fashion industry and enlighten their purchasing decisions across different malls. By promoting more meaningful conversations around recycling, Lendlease hopes to shape new perceptions and openness to how waste can be given a second life, in line with Singapore’s Zero Waste vision.

More than 100 aspiring couturiers submitted their design ideas for couture pieces made with at least 80% different forms of trash materials, such as plastics, old outfits and carton boxes. An illustrious panel of judges shortlisted just 15 finalists to bring their designs to life with the help of renowned local couturier Alfie Leong, 10 of whom will witness their creations being strutted alongside those of celebrated trash-to-fashion designer Apichet Atilattana, better known as Madaew. The fashion show will see indoor escalators at 313@somerset transformed into a multi-dimensional runway, doing justice to the grand unveiling of Singapore’s very own trash-to-fashion couture.

Following the runway show, the creations will be on display at a roving exhibition — from May 12 to July 2 — across the four Lendlease malls of 313@somerset, Parkway Parade, Jem and Paya Lebar Quarter. Lendlease will also be partnering Cloop for mall visitors to drop off unwanted textiles in collection bins for recycling and upcycling purposes.

DRINK | Cross cultural spirit collaboration | Bruichladdich

From 27 April to May 11, Scotch whisky makers Bruichladdich Distillery and award-winning bar The Elephant Room invite you to immerse in Indian culture with the presentation of four-whisky infused cocktails featuring popular Indian ingredients sourced locally from Singapore’s Tekka market.

Embellished with mango, turmeric, masala chai, and rose, the four Hebridean whiskies align with Bruichladdich’s long commitment and mission to regenerate local communities and The Elephant Room’s advocacy for Singapore’s Indian minority community.

Each cocktail features a different whisky base to suit the likes of the variety of whisky drinkers. Begin with aperitif-style Bruch Lady, which plays on a balance of sour, sweet and spicy notes, followed by spirit-forward Golden Glow, where a tangy blend derived from a four-day lacto-fermented turmeric with oven roasted banana is infused in a sous vide with the Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2013.

For a stronger flavour profile, the peated Octomore 13.1 whiskey provides smoky notes in the crisp Black Potion, replicating flavours from the Indian tea staple, masala chai. Finally, end off the evening with Candy Shop, a smooth floral blend cocktail mixed with apple juice, thyme and rose.

Bruichladdich and The Elephant Room have also teamed up with The Project Coal to create limited-edition Furoshiki bottle wrap cloths that are available as a complimentary gift with any purchase of Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie Single Malt on Lazada or Shopee. — Nicole Lim
