SINGAPORE (Nov 13): We are revamping the Capital section of The Edge Singapore to include a portfolio of global stocks, just like what we had done for Tong’s Value Investing Portfolio with Malaysian equities for the past three years. Whether by luck, brilliance or hard work, we outperformed the market by close to 80%.

The objective is simple. We want to show that value investing works, provided it is done diligently and “correctly”. And it can work for the average “man in the street” investor. This is further justified by the fact that most actively managed funds by professionals have underperformed the market. Investing in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) is an alternative.

And we have written that perhaps the risks are less than properly understood. We take the view that a properly diversified portfolio of stocks based on fundamentals can achieve better returns with lower risks. Why? Because you can achieve lower co-variances for the assets in your portfolio.
