(June 5): What’s in a name? For Sim Hock Heng, CEO at Sanli Environmental, it is a daily reminder of his company’s humble beginnings. The Mandarin words “san li” mean “three pillars”, and refer to the three founding members of the company.

Sim and two of Sanli’s executive directors — Kew Boon Kee and Christopher Pek Kian Boon — were former colleagues at water and wastewater treatment company Dayen Environmental, now known as Moya Holdings Asia. In 2005 and 2006, the trio left to start their own environmental engineering solutions firm. Lee Tien Chiat, also with Dayen previously, joined the company in 2007 as executive director.
