SINGAPORE (Sept 13): If President Donald Trump succeeds in imposing tariffs of up to US$200 billion on goods from China, who really suffers? Will it be the Americans or the Chinese?

An article by The Economist says that while duties are payable by importers, the question of who stands to lose most from these tariffs is more complicated.

For one, foreign exporters could end up paying for the tariffs if they slash prices too much to maintain access to the precious US market.
