Jovi Ho, assistant editor at The Edge Singapore, has won the CDL-Singapore Press Club Sustainability Journalism Award at the Singapore Press Club (SPC) Awards 2024, marking the paper’s second consecutive win at the annual awards.
Ho was one of seven winners announced at the Club’s 53rd Anniversary Press Ball on July 13. Guest of Honour Tan Kiat How, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Digital Development and Information, delivered opening remarks and presented the awards and certificates to the winners.
The CDL-Singapore Press Club Sustainability Journalism Award, sponsored by City Developments Limited (CDL), recognises excellent sustainability journalism that has had a positive impact on public attitudes, behaviours and policies that further the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. “The recipient of this award has demonstrated commitment and passion to leave a better world for future generations,” say organisers.
In his awards citation, Ho was recognised for consistently adding dimension to the discussion about corporate efforts to drive sustainability, providing insight into challenges and opportunities that reflect regional and global perspectives.
“He has covered a range of issues including corporate sustainability practices, environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategies, and the impact of sustainability on financial markets,” reads the citation. “In 2022, the Securities Investors Association (Singapore) named him ‘Most Promising Journalist of the Year’, and his coverage since has not let up.”
In November 2023, Ho was named “Journalist of the Year, ESG (Highly Commended)” at the State Street Institutional Press Awards Asia Pacific 2023. That same month, a cover story about greenwashing risks among banks, written by Ho and The Edge Singapore’s executive editor Goola Warden, was named “Financial Story of the Year” at the SIAS Investors’ Choice Awards 2023.

Ho says: “I am grateful for this recognition of The Edge Singapore’s coverage of sustainability and sustainable finance. I believe this is a team effort, and I am very thankful to my colleagues for helping me bring my stories to print each week.”
He adds: “Investors and corporate leaders of all ages read The Edge Singapore to keep abreast of the latest market-moving information and gather investing ideas for the region. I hope this award brings sustainability issues to our readers’ attention, and I invite everyone to read the second edition of Planet Edge, our 16-page sustainability-themed print supplement, out now in the latest issue of The Edge Singapore.”
Now in its third year, the annual awards aim to recognise journalists and media-related professionals who have excelled in their craft. At last year’s edition of the awards, The Edge Singapore’s assistant editor Khairani Afifi Noordin won the Young Journalist Award for her coverage of the blockchain, metaverse and Web3 industries; and for her experience covering financial news on both sides of the Causeway.

Ho and Khairani also won a joint award last year for their deep-dive into the launch of digital banks GXS and Trust Bank in 2022. The joint cover story won in The Hidden Gem category at the SGX Orb Awards 2023, extending The Edge Singapore’s win for the fourth consecutive year.
‘Quality nominations’
Bhagman Singh, SPC vice-president and chairperson of the Awards Committee, says: “We received a healthy number of quality nominations this year and the judges had to work hard to select the winners. The nominations reflect the industry’s high standards and the winners are truly deserving of the recognition.”
This year’s Young Journalist Awards were presented to Hariz Baharudin, Indonesia correspondent at The Straits Times; and Matthew Loh, senior breaking news reporter at Business Insider.
The Young Digital Journalist Awards were presented to Gwyneth Cheng, assistant editor at Kontinentalist; and Wang Yuchen, digital designer at SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group Newshub.
The Young PR Professional Awards were presented to Aginaya Mae Abbugao, account manager at The Hoffman Agency (Singapore); and Saeful Hakim, senior manager at Rice Communications.
Each winner received an award and a two-night stay, inclusive of breakfast for two, worth $1,000 at their choice of hotel owned by sponsor Millennium Hotels and Resorts (MHR).
SPC also inducted 10 more media veterans into its Singapore Media Industry Hall of Fame, which recognises the outstanding and lasting contributions of veteran media professionals. Since its launch in 2021, the Hall of Fame has now inducted a total of 75 honorees, 24 posthumously.
Patrick Daniel, SPC president, says: “We are proud to once again present our annual awards. We are happy to see winners from both the mainstream media and digital media, and across a range of media titles. We are deeply grateful for the continued support from our presenting sponsor Citi, category sponsors CDL and Telum Media, as well as prize sponsor MHR.”
