SINGAPORE (May 22): Men’s trends for spring/summer 2020 are richer, with deeper colours, edgier with leather biker jackets, and classier with pinstripes. There is also a resurgence of old-school styles such as double-breasted jackets and chunky sandals, giving that retro feel on the runway.

Business in Bermudas

Hot pants have staged quite a comeback this season on all the major runways, but we think the more conservative Bermuda shorts might be a more practical trend. Giving a summery twist to a classic two-piece suit, designers from Bottega Veneta and Chloe to Givenchy have embraced the Bermuda shorts suit. Part nine-to-five, part California cool, this trend is one of the most stylish and wearable of the season.

Cinched in style

Women’s fashion has been inspired by menswear trends for years, and this season is no exception with the marvellously masculine waistcoat seen on the runway. Whether included as part of a full suit at Max Mara, loosely worn over a dress à la Anna Sui and Etro, or mismatched with a jacket at Louis Vuitton, there is something quite dapper and appealing — not to mention endlessly flattering — about a cinched waistcoat.

Biker-chic

A sharp-shouldered, black leather biker jacket is the ultimate mark of a rebellious and on-point wardrobe. Part sexy, part dangerous, the best biker jackets for the season can be found embroidered at Moschino, traditionally styled at Versace, slightly voluminous at Balmain and sleek and structured at Celine, which also suggests a head-to-toe look should you be so inclined.

All lined up

Once solely favoured by bankers and businessmen, pinstriped suits have made a huge comeback this season, although in some ways we cannot say they ever left — they are quite timeless. There are plenty of styles to choose from, including the fitted varieties at Saint Laurent, the slouchy, more relaxed feel at Paul Smith and brown pinstripes à la Ermenegildo Zegna.

Best foot forward

A trend many stylish men have adopted for generations, chunky sandals are a spring/summer staple. We rather like the woven, hippie look adopted by Loewe, but there is also much to be said for the clean lines of Hermès’ sandals, which exude a quiet luxury. Sandals are often styled with socks on the runways but in our opinion, they look just as good — if not better — without.
